Secondary care is dealing with illness and injury which can still be life-threatening but where you usually have more time to act. It can be divided into two sections, Illness and Injury.

An illness is an unhealthy condition of the body, some examples would be Asthma, Diabetes, Epilepsy or Angina. When you provide first aid, it may be that the illness has not affected the patient before or it may be an existing condition.

An injury is defined as physical harm to the body, this could include fractures, head injuries, eye injuries, wounds of any kind.

With secondary care, you will need to make the decision as to whether the emergency services need to be called, sometimes it will be the obvious choice in other instances you will need to use your judgement.

This course covers some of the common conditions that you are likely to come across, if you face a situation that you are not sure about, keep calm, try to get as much information as possible about what is wrong with the patient.

Your main role is to prevent the person from getting worse, to promote their recovery and get professional help when needed, as soon as possible.
